Overall, the Viking 1 and Viking 2 missions were a great success in the exploration of Mars. The long-awaited experiments designed to search for life on the planet provided inconclusive findings: chemical reactions in the Martian soil were observed, but no trace of organic compounds was found. If there is life on Mars, it can only be a very primitive form of life, perhaps one unknown on Earth.
